
With several significant snowfalls and sustained cold temperatures, it’s been a snowy start to the year for St. Catharines. And, with a forecast of heavy rain, and snow melt continuing with temperatures above the freezing mark, residents could see high runoff of melting snow and the potential for localized flooding and water pooling around their homes and on the roadways.
A yellow-level freezing rain warning is in effect for St. Catharines. Environment Canada is warning of rainfall with amounts of 10-20 mm starting overnight through Wednesday morning for St. Catharines, as well as the potential for freezing rain and icy and slippery conditions, with a buildup of about 2 to 5 mm for some areas. The warning is expected to be in effect through to Wednesday evening.
City crews are monitoring the weather to respond as required – whether it be significant rain or freezing rain conditions. Those out on the roads or sidewalks are encouraged to use caution whether they are out driving or walking.
City officials are also encouraging residents to keep their homes and properties safe from potential flooding due to the significant rainfall and snow melt.
There are a few simple things you can do to ensure your home is protected from quickly melting snow. Shovel any snow away from the foundation of your house where possible, including window wells and exterior doors. This can help prevent water from seeping into the basement through foundational cracks when snow is packed up close to the side of your home.
Remove any ice buildup or ice dams from your eavestrough to ensure gutters direct melting snow away from your home efficiently will help keep the inside of your home dry this spring. Double check your downspouts are clear of snow and ice and draining properly, pointed away from the outer walls of your home.

With the significant snowfall St. Catharines has received, snow piles have encroached onto roadways in many areas of the city, which can temporarily block melted snow and rainwater from reaching catch basins.
While City crews have been addressing drains and grates throughout the City, and will continue to do so where possible ahead of the inclement weather, residents are encouraged to check any storm drains on their street or property are free from blockages and debris if it is safe to do so. This will help ensure proper drainage and help prevent water from pooling on the street or on your property.
