About Mayor Siscoe |
Mat Siscoe was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to David (a Naval officer) and Susan (a Registered Nurse). His family relocated frequently, as is common for military families, living in Halifax, Petersfield in the United Kingdom, and eventually settling in Ottawa. Mat completed his high school education in Ottawa before moving to Kingston, where he obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mining Engineering from Queen's University. In 2004, Mat relocated to Changwon, South Korea, where he met his wife Chrissy Sadowski, who graduated from Laura Secord High School and grew up in St. Catharines. After several years of teaching English in South Korea, Mat and Chrissy returned to Canada and settled in St. Catharines. Mat pursued a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa in 2007. Mat began his career in education in 2007 as a physics teacher at Saint Paul High School in Niagara Falls. During this time, Mat and Chrissy started their family by adopting their first child, Xavier, in 2009. They expanded their family further with the addition of their second son, Canaan, in 2012, their third son, Darius, in 2014, and finally their daughter Sophia in 2015. In 2010, Mat was elected to St. Catharines City Council, representing the St. Patrick's Ward. He served on various committees, including the City's Governance committee, the Downtown Association BIA, the Heritage committee, the St. Catharines Transit Commission, and the Linking Niagara Transit Committee. From 2015 to 2022, he held the position of Chair of the Budget Standing Committee. In early 2022, Mat was appointed to fill the Regional Council seat left vacant by the passing of Councillor Sandie Bellows. As a member of Regional Council, he served on the Public Works Committee, the Public Health and Social Services Committee, and the inaugural Niagara Transit Commission. Throughout his adult life, Mat has been actively involved in local youth sports. He has volunteered as a coach and board member for CYO hockey in St. Catharines, coached with the St. Catharines Minor Baseball Association, Port Weller Soccer, Niagara Regional Minor Football Association, and Niagara Youth Flag Football. He has also dedicated his time to coaching rugby, wrestling, and football when he was a teacher. Mat has further contributed to the community by organizing the Labour Day parade food drive for Community Care alongside Councillor Matt Harris, working overnight shifts for Out of the Cold at Queen St. Baptist Church, and serving as a Board member and Chair of the Niagara Children's Centre Board of Directors, which holds a special place in his heart. |
