Swimming levels and descriptions

Our Swim for Life program stresses lots of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate valuable Water Smart® education that will last a lifetime.

View our swimming levels to find out which level is right for you or your child, youth or teen. Classes are geared to students registered in the appropriate level only. For safety reasons, anyone who registers in an incorrect level, above or below the child's ability, will be un-registered and charged an administration fee.

If your child has not taken lessons for more than a year or you are unsure which level they should be registered in, please bring them to any Leisure Swim for a free assessment.

Evaluation process

Children are progressively evaluated throughout the session. Each child receives a progress card at the end of each session. They will receive a sticker if they complete a level. We keep progress cards on file for one complete session.

Course cancellations and combinations

We may cancel, change or combine courses due to insufficient registration.

Semi-private swimming lessons

With one instructor and two participants, you can sign up two children who can benefit from personal instruction at the same time. You can expand any private lesson to a two-person class. Simply select the time of the private swim lesson and request to convert it to semi-private lessons by contacting us by phone or making a note in your booking after registering a single registrant in the private class.

We recommend that both semi-private lesson participants be within one swim level ability up or down from one another.

Specific instructor requests

You can request a specific instructor or specific gender of instructor for your private class. We make every effort to meet your request, but we cannot guarantee that it will be granted. Please contact us by phone or through the booking system if you have a specific instructor request.

Pool protocols

  • We encourage you to minimize any pool foulings by fitting babies, tots and those without bowel control with snug, protective swim diapers.
  • We encourage participants to avoid eating or drinking too much before swimming.
  • If you are feeling unwell, we encourage you to stay home.
  • If there is a pool fouling during your lesson or if the pool is closed, we will teach water safety outside of the water. We encourage you to still come at your lesson.
  • There are no make-up classes due to absenteeism, thunder, lightning, pool foulings, emergencies or maintenance closures.
  • All participants must shower before entering the pool. It's clean, green and the law. The Public Pools Health Protection and Promotion Act mandates that every swimmer and bather must use soap and water before entering the deck.
  • Street shoes and strollers are not permitted on the pool deck.

How to have a successful swimming lessons experience

  1. Participate in a Leisure Swim before your first lessons. Orient your child to the change room, washrooms and pool to help them know what to expect. Have fun in the water and practice skills that your child already knows.
  2. Have your child assessed to determine the appropriate level you should register in. We offer free screening during any Leisure Swim at all City pools.
  3. Swimming requires patience, practice and positive feedback. Children progress at their own rate. Talk with your child about appropriate lessons and have realistic expectations. Swimming lessons are a long-term progression and a time for enjoyment in a special environment!
  4. Speak to your child's instructor. Ask about progress and any areas that you can work on with your child during Leisure Swims.
  5. Ask the pool's head lifeguard if you have any questions or concerns. They will provide a link between you and the instructor.
  6. Check your registration receipt carefully for lesson dates, times and cancellations due to holidays and special events.
