Benefits of Rain Barrels
Rain barrels are helpful to the city and our environment by:
- Reducing water pollution by keeping rainwater out of the sewers.
- Reducing the amount of bacteria, oils, grease and other pollutants from getting into local waterways.
- Redirecting water from downspouts into rain barrels and diverting excess water from reaching wastewater treatment plants in areas with combined sewage overflow systems.
- Helping plants thrive by providing water with no minerals, chlorine or other harsh chemicals.
- Reducing peak water demand and the amount of treated municipal water used outdoors during the summer months.
Maintenance
Ensure you have the correct rain barrel setup and maintenance care after installing it.
Make sure to:
- Face the overflow hose, found at the bottom of the barrel, away from your home to prevent water pooling at your home foundation.
- Place the barrel on a flat surface when in use and when watering plants.
- Place a heavy object on the side of the debris screen so that the barrel stays secured when exposed to high winds.
Winter Storage
Store your rain barrel properly over winter as improper storage can lead to damage during harsh conditions.
Make sure to:
- Drain all the water from your barrel, flip and let dry.
- Clean debris and buildup from your rain barrel before storing it for the winter. Bacteria can build, causing unpleasant odours and dirty water.
- Keep your barrel flipped downwards so water does not accumulate and sit stagnant.
- Drain and disconnect the hose and store it indoors or cover it with a tarp.
- Attach a longer downspout piece or use a flexible downspout extension so that melting water is directed away from your foundation when in use during new warm weather.
Disposal
If your rain barrel is damaged, you have two options to dispose of it:
