The Fall Tree Giveaway is part of the City’s efforts to grow the tree canopy in St. Catharines. The City’s vision is for St. Catharines to be a safe, innovative, sustainable, and caring city today and for future generations. Environmental stewardship is a key pillar of its strategic plan for this vision and protecting, preserving and enhancing the St. Catharines’ tree canopy is among the City’s strategic directions towards its goal for resilience in the face of escalating climate change events.
Among the benefits of a healthy tree canopy are reduced storm water runoff, cleaner air, and captured greenhouse gases. The City has planted about 7,000 trees on private property through its semi-annual tree giveaways.
