“Planting a tree is a simple action that can have a lasting impact,” said Mike Kraft, Development Horticultural Technician. “Through the Free Tree Giveaway, residents can help grow our urban forest and contribute to a healthier, more resilient St. Catharines.”
Protecting, preserving and enhancing St. Catharines' tree canopy, also known as the urban forest, is a key environmental stewardship priority in the City’s Strategic Plan. The canopy currently covers about 22.4 per cent of St. Catharines. The City’s goal is to increase that to at least 25 per cent by 2030.
A healthy tree canopy helps the City become more resilient to climate change and provides many benefits, such as shading streets and homes during hot summer weather, managing stormwater by absorbing rainfall and reducing runoff, and improving air quality by filtering pollutants.
The City plants about 2,400 trees a year in its parks and on boulevards. To get more trees planted on private property, the City gives about 1,000 trees away each year through Free Tree Giveaways. Since 2017, the City has given away about 9,000 trees to residents for planting on private property.
