A new, accessible and inclusive splash pad has opened up in Merritton just in time for summer.
Mayor Mat Siscoe was joined by members of City Council, City staff and the Recreation Master Plan Advisory Committee to “officially” turn on the water on at the new Secord Woods Park Splash Pad Tuesday, June 10.
Located at 120 Woodrow St., next to Applewood Public School, the splash pad was developed following extensive public engagement. In addition to the array of water sprayers, the project includes a sun shelter, benches, washrooms, hard-surface connections, and new tree plantings.
“This project has been a true community effort from day one — right down to picking the perfect spot for our newest splash pad,” said Mayor Siscoe. “I can’t wait to see families and visitors making memories and enjoying this fantastic new feature in the park.”
Situated within walking distance for many Merritton families, the splash pad adds a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive feature to the neighbourhood park. To support access, the City partnered with the District School Board of Niagara to allow splash pad visitors to park at Applewood when school is not in session.
The addition of a splash pad to Secord Woods Park, which also features a playground and open green space, is part of the City’s Recreation Facility and Programming Master Plan to create a city where everyone can play. While the splash pad is open for the season, the City will complete more tree plantings and landscaping work in the fall.
“The new splash pad and improvements to Secord Woods Park we are celebrating today enhances our work to create more opportunities for all of our residents to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles in St. Catharines,” said Phil Cristi, the City’s director of Community, Recreation and Culture Services.
Secord Woods Splash Pad is the fifth splash pad operated by the City. Others are located at Bogart Street Park, Catherine Street Park, Pearson Park and West Park. Splash pads are open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from now until September. Everyone is welcome. Like the City’s other splash pads, operating hours may be extended to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during extreme heat advisories.
The City’s outdoor pools, including Port Dalhousie Pool, Lincoln Park Pool, and Lion Dunc Schooley Pool, will open for the season on Friday, June 27, 2025.
