To mark Emergency Preparedness Week, May 3 to 9, the City of St. Catharines is urging residents to take simple, proactive steps to be adequately prepared in the event of an emergency.
“Prepared together” is the theme of this year’s Canada-wide campaign, which aligns with the City’s focus on three key actions: know the hazards, make a plan, and prepare an emergency kit to protect yourself, your family, and your community.
“Emergencies like power outages, basement flooding and severe thunderstorms can happen without warning,” said Deputy Fire Chief Andrea DeJong. “Being prepared can make all the difference and even save lives when every second counts. Families need to know what to do, where to go, and have the tools to stay safe for at least 72 hours.”
An emergency plan ensures everyone in your household knows what to do in various situations, like where to meet if separated, how to contact each other, and who to check on. Find out how to make an emergency plan in our Emergency Preparedness Guide.
A 72-hour emergency kit should include food and water, a first aid kit, flashlights and batteries, medication, a portable phone charger, important documents and supplies for any pets. Kits should be stores in an easily accessible location and checked regularly. Read the City’s full checklist.
In St. Catharines, residents should be especially mindful of localized flooding, extreme weather, and power outages. The City provides resources on how to reduce flood risks, including sump pump tips, backwater valve information, and seasonal maintenance guidance.
