In celebration of National Poetry Month, the City of St. Catharines and the St. Catharines Public Library are partnering to present a poetry workshop for community members of all ages, all writing levels, and for those who wouldn’t call themselves writers at all, at the St. Catharines Library’s Central Branch (54 Church St.) on April 25 at 10 a.m.
What happens when a dragon goes to carpentry school? Who is going to solve the mystery of the missing octopus? Have you ever seen trees in love? Using nature and myths as a starting point, participants will enjoy a series of writing prompts that allow them to explore their imagination to write poetry and tell stories. The workshop will be the first led by the City’s newly appointed Poet Laureate Shannon Kitchings.
"Poetry is for everyone. Taking time to express the creative ideas in our minds in a poem allows us to bring those dreams to life.” Said Kitchings. “You get to hold your idea in your hand and share it with someone else in a way that makes you both feel something new. It makes you pause, for just a moment, and really notice the world around you. Writing is poetry, a powerful tool for feeling alive."
The workshop is part of a series of initiatives recognizing National Poetry Month and highlighting the City’s commitment to arts and culture. The workshop is free with all materials provided. More information is available at stcatharines.ca/poetlaureate.
