The City of St. Catharines Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) is inviting nominations for the Accessibility Matters Here Award, recognizing local businesses that are making meaningful strides toward accessibility and inclusion.
The award is an initiative of the Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee (JAAC) and the St. Catharines AAC, and celebrates businesses that are actively working to:
• Remove barriers.
• Providing inclusive and accessible communication.
• Supporting equitable employment practices.
• Delivering accessible customer service with dignity and respect.
• Designing or adapting spaces for safer and navigable access.
This effort marks the first time the AAC is partnering with the JAAC for the Accessibility Matters Here campaign. Last year the JAAC launched the campaign in its member municipalities, which includes Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pelham, Port Colborne, Thorold and West Lincoln.
“The Accessibility Matters Here Award is about recognizing local businesses that are taking real, meaningful steps to remove barriers and create more inclusive spaces for everyone,” said Margaret Nicholson, Accessibility Coordinator and AAC Staff Liaison. “From accessible customer service and communication to equitable employment practices and welcoming, navigable spaces, these efforts show how accessibility is being put into action across St. Catharines. We’re proud to partner with the JAAC for the first time on this campaign and to build on the momentum started in their member municipalities last year.”
Nominations are open through to May 14.
Award recipients recognized through the campaign will receive a certificate of recognition and a door decal. The decal signals to customers and community members that a business is committed to accessibility, inclusion, and prioritizes equitable access to its spaces and services.
Nomination forms are available through participating municipal websites, including stcatharines.ca/AMH or by email:
