Fri Jan 30 Update: additional snow removal will take place on St Paul St Friday night. There will be no removal the night of Saturday Jan 31. Snow removal will resume at night on Sunday Feb 1.
The City continues its snow removal efforts by targeting the downtown core tonight (Thursday, Jan. 29) – and the next several days as required, to ensure safe and accessible streets for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Tonight crews will start their efforts about 11 p.m. to account for additional activity due to special events at Meridian Centre and FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. While plans are subject to change, they will be focusing on sections of St. Paul Street tonight. Other areas in addition to St. Paul Street, which will see removal take place from Ontario Street through to Geneva Street, include King and Church Streets from Ontario Street to Carlisle Street; and William, Queen and James Streets from St. Paul Street to King Street. Work will take place through the early morning hours and may also extend to additional streets as needed.
To support the snow removal effort, vehicles that remain parked along these streets will be relocated to Market Square. The City reminds residents and visitors of the year-round overnight parking restriction in effect daily from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the downtown core’s metered zones. City lots and garages are available for parking free overnight – a map of locations is available at stcatharines.ca/parking. Please plan ahead and avoid parking in the affected areas during overnight hours.
“We appreciate the community’s support as we work to keep our downtown safe and accessible during winter weather,” said Chris Anders, the City’s manager of linear infrastructure operations. “With the significant snowfall over the last several weeks, this is an important effort to support both the businesses and the community at large.”
City crews remain mindful of special events happening over the coming days and are working to try and minimize any disruptions while patrons are downtown.
The St. Catharines Downtown Association has been working with the City to help notify local businesses and members of the work.
The City will provide updates as the operation progresses. After hours, residents can contact the shift supervisor at 905.688.5601, ext. 2220.
