The City of St. Catharines is moving forward with plans to renew four neighbourhood parks, continuing to invest in enhancing community spaces for residents of all ages and abilities.
Renewal projects are planned in 2026 for Shauna Park, Guy Road Park, Barley Drive Park and Joseph L. McCaffery Park, with proposed renewals to playgrounds, multi-use courts, and other park features. Plans include a new multi-use court (tennis, basketball and ball hockey) and play equipment at Guy Road Park, new multi-use courts (basketball and ball hockey) and play equipment at Shauna Park, and new play equipment at Barley Drive Park and Joseph L. McCaffery Park.
“We’re excited to involve the community in the renewal of St. Catharines neighbourhood parks for 2026,” said Manager of Community Initiatives and Partnerships Eric Lamothe. “The City is committed to creating parks which are accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all. We look forward to hearing the community’s input on how we can make our parks even better.”
To gather community input, the City will host two Public Information Centres (PICs) next month, providing residents with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed improvements, review draft concept plans, and share their feedback. The sessions will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 2 and Thursday, Dec. 4, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Irene Locke Room, at the Kiwanis Aquatics Centre, 425 Carlton St.
At the PICs, community members will have the opportunity to view and comment on concept boards outlining the planned enhancements for each park. City staff will be available to answer questions, share project details, and discuss each design concept in depth. For residents unable to attend, project details, draft concept plans, and an option to provide feedback are also available on the City’s online engagement page at www.stcatharines.ca/parksrenewal.
“Input from the public is essential as we strive to make our parks fun, inviting, and welcoming for all,” said LandscapeArchitect Planner Morgan McAvoy. “These spaces reflect the City’s commitment to neighbourhoods that foster a sense of belonging and offer accessible, enjoyable options for outdoor play and community gathering."
The Parks Renewal Plan projects align with the City’s accessibility standards and strategic plan, with upgrades following a 2019 City Council policy to ensure playgrounds incorporate firm and stable play surfaces. Through this policy and other efforts, including a $2-million dollar investment, St. Catharines is expanding its network of accessible playgrounds, ensuring that neighbourhood parks meet the needs of a diverse community.
