With significant snowfall continuing, along with the accumulation throughout the day, the City of St. Catharines has enacted a winter parking ban.
Restrictions went into effect at noon today (Thursday, Jan. 15), in conjunction with the City declaring a significant weather event. The restrictions prohibit on-street parking in most neighbourhoods during winter storm events, ensuring roads are clear for plows, emergency vehicles, and public transit.
Residents must move their vehicles off the street to avoid fines and towing. Those who fail to comply may be subject to a $40 ticket and towing at their expense.
Local weather and road conditions will determine how long the restrictions remain in place. Residents should plan to keep their vehicles off the street for at least 72 hours.
Vehicles parked on the road during a winter parking ban slow down plowing operations, leading to unsafe road conditions. Vehicles left on the street also force plows to return for additional passes, delaying snow-clearing efforts for the entire community.
Some areas in the city are exempt due to limited off-street parking, including sections of downtown, Merritton and Port Dalhousie. Residents can view the winter parking exemption map at www.stcatharines.ca/winterparking.
The public will be notified when the ban is lifted via the City’s website, social media channels, mySTC notifications and local news outlets.
Residents needing alternative parking can look for an exemption area, use one of the City’s parking garages or ask a neighbour or family member if they can park in their driveway.
