The City is now accepting applications from local volunteer groups interested in helping bring outdoor skating to neighbourhoods again this winter.
Entering its seventh season, the Community Outdoor Ice Rink Program enables volunteer groups to build, operate, and maintain outdoor ice rinks in City-owned parks. Previous volunteer-run rinks have been located at Bogart Street Park, St. Patrick’s Park, Partridge Park, Walker’s Creek Park, and Port Dalhousie Lions Park.
“Outdoor ice rinks are a favoured pastime of Canadian winters,” said Kaylea Cassano, Community Initiatives Specialist. “We’re always thrilled to team with volunteers to create spaces where residents of all ages can stay active, connect with their neighbours, and enjoy the outdoors. This program has always been about building community spirit and making winter fun accessible for everyone.”
Volunteer groups may apply to use any City park, provided it offers a relatively flat surface, access for emergency vehicles, and sufficient parking. Groups must be prepared to build, operate, and maintain the rink throughout the season.
Applicants do not need to be incorporated charities or not-for-profit organizations, but must ensure free and equal access to the rink for all community members. Volunteers are responsible for sourcing all necessary materials, including boards, tarps, shovels, scrapers, and water, and must be able to store equipment.
The City will provide signage and training sessions on rink construction and reporting requirements. Up to six rink locations will be supported, with grants of up to $1,000 available per rink to help offset costs.
Applications opened today (Oct. 1) and are due by Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. Successful applicants will be notified thereafter. The outdoor rink season will run from Dec. 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
