The concrete base repair program is an annual program utilized by the City to extend the useful life of concrete roads.
The project has been awarded, and the successful contractor is Niagara Concrete Limited, construction is tentatively scheduled to start in March 2025 (Weather Dependent) and is scheduled to be completed by June 2025 (weather permitting) in your area.
The following is a list of streets which are part of the 2025 Concrete Base Repair Program:
Every effort will be made to maintain access to abutting properties and to minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses and pedestrians. A construction inspector, representing the City, will be present on-site during construction and can be contacted on site for information.
In order to protect construction workers, complete the work safely and cost effectively, temporary lane closures may be required, and traffic will be unavoidably congested at these times. Such closures will be minimized as much as possible; however, at such times, the contractor will provide traffic control personnel. Although the contractor is required to provide safe pedestrian access, care is requested when walking through the construction zone. Access to your driveway maybe interrupted for three to four days in order to pour the concrete. In the event your driveway is impacted by construction the contractor will give you notice in advance.
Some of the City’s roadways are constructed of concrete. Over time cracks and holes appear in the road as weather conditions and regular wear-and-tear occur, when water enters the cracks created in the road, it can lift chunks of the concrete. Preventative maintenance such as concrete base repairs can extend the life of the road.
If preventative measures, such as concrete base repairs, are periodically done, the concrete of the road can last 50 years. If preventative measures are not undertaken, a road might last only 25-30 years.
Taking steps to repair the road before it reaches a state of further disrepair has some obvious benefits. The work results in an improved road surface. That benefits road users and also keeps the road in a state of good repair.
Once an area is marked for repair, the old concrete road is sawcut and removed from site. Where appropriate load transfer devises are drilled into the remaining sections of road and then new concrete will be poured.
If your driveway is replaced, the part of your driveway that is disturbed will also be replaced (typically one metre), driveways if disturbed, will be repaired with the same material as existing.
In some cases, your property (lawn and driveway) may be disturbed during construction. The contractor will carry out the necessary restoration which in some cases will include the placement of new sod. Construction will take place in stages and there maybe delays between each stage.
The work will require us to limit on street parking during some stages. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable due to the nature of the work, as crews need room to dig and bring materials in and out of the site safely. Residents are requested to please park in their driveways where possible or find alternative parking on adjacent streets when required during construction.
Weather permitting, crews plan to start the concrete base repair program in March 2025. Crews will place temporary "No Parking" signs each night to indicate where they will be working in the following days. Residents will not be able to park vehicles in front of these signs during working hours (typically Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.). If you need more information regarding the schedule, please contact us. There will be a City representative on site who can also be approached with concerns during construction.
We will be installing new sod in some locations and would ask for your cooperation in keeping this sod watered. Note that installation of sod may occur at a later date, when the weather and temperature are more favourable.
Residents should mark in the field fixtures such as sprinkler heads and sprinkler systems prior to construction. The City will not be responsible for any damages to fixtures that were not marked.
