Honorary Street Naming Program

The Honorary Street Naming Program is a symbolic way to honor an individual, organization, or event that has made a positive impact on the City of St. Catharines, the Province of Ontario, and/or Canada, and that aligns with the City of St. Catharines’ corporate values.

Preference will be given to applications that honour an individual, organization, or event that holds local significance.

The City will prioritize honorary names significant to Indigenous Peoples, Black communities, and equity-deserving groups, and give consideration to celebrating untold stories that are not currently represented in the City of St. Catharines’ public spaces.

Approved honorary street names may be in effect for a term of ten years.

How to Apply

The Honorary Street Naming Program expects applicants to provide the following details:

  • Clear evidence depicting the history associated with the individual, organization, or event being honoured.
  • Proof of support from the Ward Councillors.
  • Proof of community support (e.g. letters of support, survey results, or signatures), by documenting a minimum of 75% approval of the residents, tenants and/or property owners on the desired street.

Applications for the Honorary Street Naming Program will be accepted on an ongoing basis. The application is located at the bottom of this page.

Responsibilities of the City

  • Review all applications and conduct a historical and cultural review of the proposed name.
  • Provide the applicant with information related to the dimensions, colour, design, and cost of the honorary street sign.
  • Install and remove the honorary street sign

The City reserves the right to reconsider an honorary street name if:

  • The approved name no longer aligns with the character, values, or identity of the City.
  • The continued use of the name would not be in the best interest of the community.
  • The program be terminated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honorary street names must be on city roads. Applications submitted for a location on a regional road will not be considered eligible.

The estimated cost to produce one (1) sign is $450, and the labour to install the sign depends on the location and method of installation. Costs associated with signs and labour are the responsibility of the applicant. Confirmation of these fees will be provided following the review of the application. A minimum of two honorary street signs must be installed per application, where feasible.

Approved honorary street names will be in effect for a term of ten (10) years.

At the end of the ten (10) year term, the honorary street name sign will be removed and returned to the applicant, where feasible.

No. At the end of the ten (10) year term, both the honorary street name and the street that received the honorary name will be retired from the program to avoid any duplication when naming another street.
