Water Meters

The City of St. Catharines uses water meters, located at each property, to determine water usage for the property.

Learn more about how we use meter readings to accurately determine bill amounts, water meter equivalency rates and frequently asked questions, such as:

  • How much water can pass through my meter?
  • Who owns and maintains my water meter and water meter valve?
  • Where is the meter located in my home?

You can submit a water meter reading to the City of St. Catharines when:

  • Receiving a water meter reading card
  • You are moving and ready to vacate the premises, and a City official has not obtained a water meter reading yet
  • You have a tenant moving in or out of the property and you wish to set up a Tenant Mailing Contract or have one in place

Submission options

When submitting a water meter reading, ensure you have your account and meter number. Both can be found on your water / wastewater bill or meter card.

You can submit a water meter reading with the City by choosing one of the following options:

Understanding your water meter

  • If your water meter shows five digits followed by a tenths digit after a decimal point (number in black), please include the tenths digit in your submission.
  • If your water meter shows five digits and more than one digit after the decimal point, please include only the first digit (the tenths digit) to the right of the decimal in your submission.

Our Water Meter Replacement Program ensures water meters are changed every 15 years near the end of their lifespan. Learn about how we replace meters and our new automated meter reading devices.
