Museum Reopening & COVID-19

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, including the Lock 3 Viewing Platform, is open to the public with limited capacity. We are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Viewing Platform is only accessible through the Museum facility.

The public is reminded that COVID-19 continues to pose a threat to the health of the community, and as such masks should continue to be worn alongside the continuation of handwashing and physical distancing. Mask and screening requirements remain in effect for those entering the facility.

Hours of Operation

We are open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Visitors can enjoy the Museum and Welland Canals Centre, including the Lock 3 during our operating hours.

The Lock 3 Viewing Platform is currently only accessible through the Museum facility at this time. Access to the Viewing Platform is open from  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. 

Closed: Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.

Admission by Donation

The St. Catharines Museum is open to the public by donation. Suggested donation is $5.00 per person. For information and pricing for group tours and educational programming, please see Museum Tours and Programming below.

Admission donations help support the Museum's ability to provide:

  • Educational and public programming
  • Conservation and preservation of valued and historic artifacts to be kept in trust for present and future generations
  • Development of in-house exhibits. Artifacts and archival records from our collection are used to bring forward the stories from our own local heritage
  • And much more!

During Your Visit: Sensory Backpacks and Quiet Spaces

Sensory Backpacks, containing resources, toys, and fidget toys are available on a first-come-first-serve basis at the Information Desk. 

Please note: due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, Sensory Backpacks and other touch-based interactives are currently unavailable. 

Sensory Backpacks

There are a number of rest areas and quiet spaces for families to take a break to slow down. Areas that are usually quiet spaces include: 

  • Lockview Lounge
  • Rooftop Garden

Please consult with our friendly Hospitality Staff for alternatives if these spaces are occupied.

Sensory-Friendly Sunsets Program

Join us for a sensory-friendly Musuem program experience on the first Tuesday of each month. Please visit our Museum Events page for more information.

Merritt's Mercantile

The gift shop at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre carries a wide variety of gifts, specialty items, Canadiana, books and more. Coffee, tea, and snacks are also available.

Lockview Lounge

The Lockview Lounge, located on the second floor of the centre, provides a panoramic view of Lock 3 with comfortable seating. This area is especially popular in inclement weather!

Lock 3 Viewing Platform

Take the elevator to the third floor and exit directly onto the Lock 3 Viewing Platform for an up-close and personal view of the lock and the ships that traverse it. Check ship times for the Welland Canal (select 'Welland Lock 3' from the pull-down menu).

Discovery Park

An outdoor picnic area, playground and our Discovery Park, filled with interesting artifacts and information about the Welland Canals. Plenty of great photo ops.

Welland Ship Canal Fallen Workers Memorial
An 85-year-old promise to honour 138 men who died building one of the greatest engineering marvels in Canada was fulfilled with the unveiling of the Welland Canal Fallen Workers Memorial in St. Catharines, Ont. on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017.

The Memorial is located at the North-end of Lock 3 and is accessible 24/7.

Recreation
You can also make the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre your starting and stopping place for walking, biking, rollerblading and more on the Greater Niagara Circle Route and paved multi-use trail.

Host your event at the St. Catharines Museum!

The St. Catharines Museum has spaces available to rent for events including meetings, birthday parties, showers, dinners and banquets!

The Burgoyne Room, located on the main floor of the Museum is ideal for meetings and small to medium sized events. The room can accommodate up to 48 guests for dining or 80 with a theatre style set-up.

The rental fee for the Burgoyne Room is $32.61 + HST per hour, plus any applicable insurance.

The Lockview Lounge, located on the second floor of the museum, overlooking Lock 3, is available for limited public rentals and is ideal for meetings and medium to large events. The room can accommodate up to 100 guests for dining or approximately 200 guests with a theatre-style set-up.

The rental fee for the space is $46.59 + HST per hour, plus any applicable insurance fees. Please note that rental rates are subject to change.

Local Directions

From Downtown St. Catharines

Go east on St. Paul St. Turn right onto Queenston St. (at the fork in the road). Follow Queenston St. and turn right at Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is half a kilometre on your left.

From the Pen Centre Mall

Go east on Glendale Ave. Continue on this road, following the St. Catharines Museum at Lock 3 signs. Turn left at Welland Canals Pkwy just before the Glendale lift bridge. The Museum is half a kilometre on your right.

From Port Dalhousie

Go south on Lakeport Rd. Turn left onto Lakeshore Rd. Turn right onto Bunting Rd. (just before the Lock 1 lift bridge). Turn left again onto Welland Canals Pkwy. Continue on the parkway. The Museum is about a 10-minute drive and is on your left.

From Other Cities

From Hamilton/Toronto

Follow the QEW eastbound over the Garden City Skyway and exit at Glendale Ave. Follow Glendale Ave west, cross the lift bridge, turn right onto Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is located half a kilometre on your right.

From Niagara Falls, ON

Follow the QEW Toronto. Exit at Glendale Ave. Follow Glendale Ave. west, cross the lift bridge and  turn right onto Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is located half a kilometre on your right.

From Niagara-on-the-Lake

Follow Highway 55. Turn right at Queenston St. (under the Garden City Skyway). Cross the lift bridge and turn left onto Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is located half a kilometre on your left.

From Buffalo, NY

Cross the Peace Bridge and take the QEW Toronto. Exit at Glendale Ave. Follow Glendale Ave. west, cross the lift bridge and turn right onto Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is located half a kilometre on your right.

From Niagara Falls, NY

Cross the Rainbow Bridge. Follow the signs to Highway 420. Take the QEW Toronto. Exit at Glendale Ave. Follow Glendale Ave. west, cross the lift bridge and turn right onto Welland Canals Pkwy. The Museum is located half a kilometre on your right.
