STC150: Taylor and Bate Ltd. Brewers and Maltsters

In 1834 the company that would eventually be known as Taylor and Bate Ltd. was established by James Taylor and called "the St. Catharines Brewery." It was built on the east side of the First Welland Canal.
In 1839 the brewery was destroyed by fire but was later rebuilt. In 1841 Mr. Thomas B. Bate joined the business and was made a partner in 1857 when the firm became "Taylor and Bate".
In 1907 the plant consisted of a storage house, ice plant, bottling house, malt house, stables and other building. The workforce consisted of twenty-five people.
In 1927 the company was sold to E.T. Sandell. Mr. Sandell later owned the radio station CKTB and the call letters were thought to have come from the name of his brewery Tayor and Bates. In the 1930's Mr. Sandell sold the company to Carling Breweries, who shut down the facility in 1934. The property was eventually expropriated by the Niagara Region and the buildings torn down as part of the 406 highway construction.
In November 1998, a new Taylor and Bate Brewery opened at 75 St. Paul Street. Tim Taylor, one of the principal owners, was the great-great grandson of James Taylor who started the original Taylor and Bate Brewery in 1834 along with Thomas Bate. In November 2001 the St. Paul St. brewery ceased operation.
