Other large collections focus on sports, particularly rowing, ships and shipping, the Welland Canals, the grape and wine industry, education, costumes and textiles, fine art, community organizations, newspapers, land records, and so much more!

The St. Catharines Museum also houses the St. Catharines Standard image collection, which comprises of more than 500,000 images spanning 62 years of The Standard in the community.

Our purpose is to collect, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret artifacts and archival records, along with their associated information relative to the history of St. Catharines and the Welland Canals for the education and enjoyment of the public.

The Museum adds objects to its collections from time to time. The St. Catharines Museum acquires items and collections of historical value through gift, loan and purchase. To donate items to our Collections, please review our Donating to the Museum brochure.

The St. Catharines Museum strives to prevent damage or deterioration to cultural property through preventative maintenance, a controlled environment, and proper handling, exhibit, and storage techniques.

The Museum has as its purpose to study and document museum-related collections, community history, and program-related subjects for the advancement of knowledge.

The preservation of objects of historical significance to the community provides us an opportunity to tell the story of the community through objects on display.  Every object tells a unique story about the people and places that have helped make our community what it is today.

We connect objects and their associated stories and share these stories with our community through exhibitions, public programs, and online programs and resources such as our blog and our eMuseum digital collections portal.
