Ward 1: Merritton

Westchester Place by Ashley Andrews

Location: Queenston Street and Eastchester Avenue

Website: ashleyandrews.ca

Social media: Instagram — @ashleyandrews_printmaking

Artist’s Description

The piece is based on Westchester Place, which once stood across the street from the traffic signal box.

Built in the late 1840s by builder and mill owner Moses Cook, Westchester Place was home to Cook, his wife, and their three daughters. Named for neighbouring Westchester Avenue, the house retained its name long after the street was divided, offering inspiration for an art project exploring its history and the lives lived within its walls.

Many thanks to the St. Catharines Museum for the research and photographs used to guide this project.

Website: joe.gottli.com

Artist’s Description

My traffic signal box design highlights several birds of Niagara, with two sides featuring year-round birds and two sides featuring migratory birds. The sides of the box are also designed to mimic barn boards and painted quilts — familiar sights throughout the farmland that extends west beyond the box.

My Garden City: 1876–2026 by Joanne Ring

Location: Niagara St. and Vine Street / Facer Street

Social media: Instagram — @joannemring

Artist’s Description

My Garden City: 1876–2026 is a larger-than-life, colourful floral collage inspired by my favourite contemporary nickname for St. Catharines: the Garden City. I love the city I call home, the place where I have chosen to build a life and raise my family. As an artist and avid gardener, I feel a natural connection to the spirit of the Garden City. This work is my homage to St. Catharines: a celebration of the city I love, its vibrant character, and the joy of living and growing here.

A Sight or Two or More by Myling Pak

Location: Martindale Road and Erion Road

Social media: Instagram — @mylingpak

Artist’s Description

This piece showcases the relationship between human activities and nature through imagery such as plants, insects, biking, and picnics. I wanted to convey a personal experience within this ward, where hiking and geocaching were prominent activities.

KEEPIN’ IT LOCAL! by Marty

Location: Ontario Street and Carlton Street

Social media: Instagram and TikTok — @martysprintshop

A Place of Our Own by Tracy Tendean

Location: Lakeshore Road and Bunting Road

Social media: Instagram — @tlt.illustration

Artist’s Description

This design was heavily inspired by the people in my life, especially my family from Indonesia and the Philippines, who put down roots in St. Catharines and have called it home for more than 50 years. The floral details on the sides represent the beauty of the community and its neighbours: chrysanthemums for St. Catharines, daffodils for Niagara Falls, and roses for Welland, to name a few.

Every Walk Around the Corner by Lou Losier

Location: Niagara Street and Parnell Road

Inflorescence by Jon Shaw

Location: Lakeshore Road and Geneva Street

Website: jonshawpaintings.com

Social media: Instagram — @jonnieredbeard

Artist’s Description

My piece celebrates what I feel are the iconic symbols of the simple joy of “Summers in Port.” I recreated these icons through handmade ink and watercolour illustrations, which I then scanned and arranged in Photoshop.

Iconic Port Dalhousie by Tim Alblas

Location: Lakeshore Road and Lakeport Road

Website: alblasdesign.com

Social media: Instagram — @alblasdesign

Artist’s Description

As a Port Dalhousie resident, I wanted to capture all the iconic imagery this relatively small area of St. Catharines has to offer. Through historical landmarks, nautical activities, and an abundance of wildlife, my goal was to visually connect the community to the place where they live — or visit — by taking a closer look at what makes Port Dalhousie unique and iconic.
