Ontario Jaycee Gardens
Jaycee Gardens is St. Catharines’ largest horticulture park with more than 21 acres of floral displays and landscaped grounds. Located on Ontario Street, it overlooks Martindale Pond, is the site of the city’s largest single planting of annuals and perennials, and forms one of the most aesthetically pleasing garden displays in Niagara Region.
History The land was originally part of the Third Welland Canal, and was purchased by the City in 1975. Used initially as a landfill site, the property was later rezoned as a green belt area. In the late 70’s, the St. Catharines Jaycees donated funds to help complete the park.
The park is unique in its design, and has been landscaped to provide an escape from the fast pace of city life. The charm of Old Port Dalhousie, the calm waters of Martindale Pond and the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course, can all be viewed from the northern perimeter of the park grounds. Visitors can enjoy discovering the remnants of the Third Welland Canal still scattered throughout the park. The original lock wall with bollards still intact along with the wooden pilings from the first dock cribbing are in the northeast corner of the park.
