Happy Rolph“s Bird Sanctuary

Located on Read Road off Lakeshore Road

Happy Rolph Bird Sanctuary is a 15.06-acre municipal park on the shores of Lake Ontario.  The Sanctuary boasts one of Canada’s most exotic collections of flowering rhododendrons.

The petting farm, which operates from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend, houses a variety of farm animals including chickens, pigs, horses, rabbits, sheep and goats.

Hundreds of ducks, geese and native birds live in the adjacent pond. The pond inlet, sheltered by evergreens and bordered by grassy banks and willow trees, offers food and shelter for the resident waterfowl and migratory birds.

Since the acquisition of this property in 1974, the city has extended pathways to the lake, added a parking lot and bird feeders, and renovated the barn and pond area. Picnic and playground facilities were expanded to include a pavilion and washrooms. The park offers a unique opportunity to experience nature first hand.

9/11 Walkway
The 9/11 Walkway recognizing the 27 Canadians that passed away at the World Trade Centre is located at the Happy Rolph’s Bird Sanctuary. The victims are memorialized by twenty seven varieties of decidious trees. The walkway has benches that enable those walking on the trail to enjoy the beautiful vistas on the shores of Lake Ontario.
