Name the Park at 91 York St.

The City of St. Catharines is renaming the park located at 91 York St. (at the corner of York Street and Taylor Avenue). City Council, on Aug. 12, 2019, approved a request to name the park to reflect the area and history of the greenspace.

How you can help name the park at the corner of York Street and Taylor Avenue

  • The City is calling on residents to help name the park at 91 York St., and would like your suggestions.
  • The submission period for names closed Tuesday, Oct. 15.
  • Once all suggestions have been received, staff will review the names and present a short list of finalists to the public. Preference will be given to names that reflect the area's history, heritage and environment.
  • Voting on the finalists is expected to take place in mid November and a name will be presented to City Council in early 2020.

Re-naming of Parks Policy

The City’s Naming Policy for Parks, Trails and Recreational Facilities, recognizes that the names of City parks, trails and recreation facilities have a significant influence on the sense of community. The City encourages names that reflect and acknowledge the area’s history, heritage and environment through a transparent, equitable and efficient naming policy.

The naming policy prioritizes names in the following order;

  1. Civic or historical significance
  2. Location or features
  3. Significant individuals, families, organizations and foundations
