Free tree giveaway this Saturday

Be guaran-treed a native tree by coming early to the City’s Free Tree giveaway on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 a.m., at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre.

Four hundred trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for residents to plant on their property. The event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies last at the centre’s parking lot.

Trees will be distributed in three-gallon pots and are about three-feet tall. They should easily fit inside a standard car. Residents can choose from four native varieties: Eastern Redbud, Hackberry, Pin Oak and Red Maple. Horticulture experts from the City will be available to answers questions about planting and maintaining the different types of trees.

To receive a free tree, residents must agree to plant and maintain the tree on private property located in St. Catharines, ideally in their own yards, and not on boulevards, along streets or in City parks. This event aligns with one of the City’s goals to grow the tree canopy by 30 per cent.

Proof of St. Catharines residency is required (such as a driver’s licence) and each household is limited to one tree.

Residents are encouraged not to ‘leaf’ at the last minute and arrive early to ensure their preferred variety. For more information about the event and trees, visit stcatharines.ca/Trees.
