Mitten Tree campaign kicks off with a bang Nov. 30

November 25, 2019 — The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre is getting ready to give the gift of warmth.

A holiday tradition will return to the museum this Saturday, Nov. 30, with a celebration marking the launch of the organization’s annual Mitten Tree campaign. This year the museum has planned a full day of free family fun to celebrate the return of the campaign. For more than a decade a tree has been set up at the museum over the holidays. The public is encouraged to come out and decorate the tree with donations of new or gently-used winter wear such as mittens, gloves, scarves and toques in support of Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold and Start Me Up Niagara’s Out of the Cold program.

“It’s really a great opportunity for us all to step up and give back to our community, the gift of a toque or gloves can make a huge difference in the life of someone struggling over the winter months,” said Museum Public Programmer Lauren Curtas.

Last year the clothing drive gathered over 300 winter items for individuals in need.

This year’s launch celebration, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being ramped up. The free event will feature crafts; hot chocolate; a knitting circle for beginner and experienced knitters; live music courtesy of Sarah Boulton and a special visit from Santa Claus. It will be a great opportunity to give the gift of warmth, socialize in an inviting, accessible atmosphere and enjoy historically meaningful interpretation.

“We wanted to go big with the Mitten Tree campaign this year,” said Curtas, adding, “it’s an effort worth celebrating with some festive fun, we hope the public steps up once again to ensure everyone in our community can stay warm this winter.”

The Mitten Tree campaign will run at the museum from Nov. 30, 2019 until Jan. 5, 2020.
