Celebrate the holidays at the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market

Posted on Tuesday December 03, 2019

Dec. 3, 2019 - The St. Catharines Farmers’ Market is spreading festive cheer every Saturday until Christmas.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, 14 and 21, visitors to the farmers’ market will have an opportunity to enjoy free cookies and samples of hot apple cider, courtesy of market vendors, and shoppers will also be able to enjoy activities with the Christmas Discovery Table. While the market is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., holiday activities take place from 9 to 11 a.m.

“The Christmas Discovery Table brings to our local market a fun, informal, and interactive area for all ages. Over the coming weeks, visitors will learn about vendor products that will bring their holiday season to a new level,” said Deanna Chakarova, community and market coordinator. “It’s not only a chance to learn, but it’s also an opportunity to incorporate local and build your community.”

The Christmas Discovery Table will be busy with family friendly activities. Each Saturday will feature a different theme, including old-fashioned Christmas on Dec. 7, Christmas sweets on Dec. 14 and Christmas in the kitchen on Dec. 21. Themes are selected based around products you can find in the market, including baked goods, roasted nuts and seeds, bees wax wraps, soothing petals and more.

The Christmas Discovery Table continues on the holiday celebrations that were launched earlier this fall with the Winter at the Market series. Running from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Dec. 19, the holiday market provides an opportunity for market goers to enjoy the market’s regular members, as well as a blend of additional artisans, bakers and other special vendors.

Shopping at the market is also a chance to give back to those in need during the holidays. Leading up to Christmas, the market will be accepting perishable and non-perishable food items. A Community Care donation bin will be set up at the entrance to the market. Market goers are invited to bring items from home or choose some fresh items from the market to donate to those in need.

“This is a great opportunity to donate healthy, nutritious food to support the families served by Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold,” said Chakarova. “Whether it’s buying products grown or made here in Niagara, or helping our neighbours, the market is all about supporting local.”

The farmers’ market is open year round, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year the market will be open from 6 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24 – providing guests the chance to shop for last-minute gifts or items for their holiday celebrations, and it will close Thursday, Dec. 26, Saturday, Dec. 28 and Tuesday, Dec. 31. It reopens Thursday, Jan. 2, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
