Dec. 3, 2019 — The City has moved to place a hand permanently at the helm of St. Catharines Fire Services.

The name behind that guiding hand is a familiar one in the community. On Monday City Council appointed Jeff McCormick as fire chief. McCormick has served as acting fire chief since July 31, 2017, taking over leadership of the organization from Dave Wood.

Beyond his more than two years leading St. Catharines Fire Services, McCormick brings considerable expertise and experience to the organization. He spent 30 years with the Brantford Fire Department, including 12 years as a firefighter, 12 as a fire prevention officer and another seven years in the roles of deputy chief and chief.

Before moving to the St. Catharines Fire Services to fill the role of deputy chief in 2017, McCormick headed the fire inspection and fire safety education program at Fanshawe College as co-ordinator for about a year.

“Jeff has become an invaluable part of the City’s Fire Services. He’s demonstrated real leadership in driving the service forward, he has a proven track record and we are delighted to have him leading the City’s department into the future,” said Chief Administrative Officer Shelley Chemnitz, adding the City owes a debt of gratitude to former chief Dave Wood for his time leading St. Catharines Fire Services.

St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik said McCormick was a clear choice to lead the City’s fire department.

“We’re definitely happy to have Chief McCormick on board, he knows the department and brings immense experience to the post,” said Sendzik, adding, “permanently placing Jeff in the role of chief ensures the fire service is well managed and well prepared to respond to any emergency as the department continues its efforts as a leader in Niagara.”

During his tenure as acting chief, McCormick led the department through the adoption of a new Fire Master Plan.

“I’ve come to call St. Catharines home, I’m excited to be staying here, and continuing my work with St. Catharines Fire Services,” said McCormick, adding, “it’s an excellent community and an excellent fire department. I am looking forward to building on the work that has already gone into maintaining the service as one of the best there is.”
