Student Canada 150 artwork on display at the St. Catharines Museum

Posted on Wednesday December 20, 2017

To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, elementary school students from across St. Catharines were asked to explore what they’ve learned about the nation’s past and present through artistic expressions.

What they’ve come up with, from a Lego model of Decew Falls to a watercolour painting of the Lakeside Park Carousel to a film documentary on the Salem Chapel, is now on display at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre.

The City of St. Catharines and the St. Catharines Rotary Club present the Experiential Learning Project, featuring 23 artworks by local students, on display in the Lockview Lounge at the St. Catharines Museum from now until Wednesday, Jan. 3.

“As a community, we’ve been very focused on celebrating Canada 150 with events and we wanted to do something to continue to raise awareness and understanding of our history with our youth after the anniversary has passed,” said Carla Mackie, the City’s historical services co-ordinator. “We thought the Experiential Learning Project was a great way for students to explore how local events, industry and history all played a part in how St. Catharines has become the community it is today.”

For the exhibit, students were invited to create artworks based on their knowledge related to local history or events celebrating Canada’s 150 anniversary. The City received 23 submissions in a variety of formats, including sculptures, paintings, poems and mixed-media scrapbooks. The exhibit recognizes all submitted artworks.

A reception celebrating the exhibit is set for Wednesday, Jan. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the museum. The student artists will be present to discuss their work with visitors.
