Join the tradition and warm some hearts and hands this holiday season with a donation to the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre’s Mitten Tree.
The museum’s annual Mitten Tree campaign begins this Saturday, Dec. 6, and runs through Jan. 4, 2026, with donated new and very gently used winter clothing items being accepted in support of Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold and Start Me Up Niagara.
These organizations are greatly in need of new men’s and women’s socks, and children’s winter clothing. The community is invited to bring these winter clothing donations, as well as mittens, gloves, toques, and scarves, to hang on the Mitten Tree set up in the museum, 1932 Welland Canals Pkwy., anytime over the next month during the museum’s operating hours, Mondays to Sundays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26, as well as Jan. 1. Admission is by donation.
“St. Catharines has a deep history of helping those in need and the annual Mitten Tree campaign is just one small way we can help folks in need around us,” said Kathleen Powell, supervisor of historical services at the City of St. Catharines. “We hear from folks each year who receive these items that they are very appreciated and an important part of their personal health and safety during the cold weather months.”
After hanging donations on the Mitten Tree, visitors can check out the museum, home to extraordinary historical collections and exhibits that feature local St. Catharines perspectives, artifacts, and stories of the area against the vital backdrop of the historic Welland Canals.
Find more information about the museum’s exhibits, including its permanent exhibits, and check out its current temporary exhibits while you still can.
