Pedestrian Crossovers

Pedestrian crossover at St. Paul Street and Garden Park

A pedestrian crossover is a type of crossing that requires vehicles to stop and allow pedestrians to cross the road.

Pedestrian crossovers have specific pavement markings and crossing signs that make them easy to identify. 

Locations

Pedestrian crossovers in St. Catharines are located at the following intersections:

  • St. Paul Street and Garden Park, in front of the entrance to the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre
  • Vine Street and Nello Street 

Right of way

  • Pedestrians have the right of way at pedestrian crossovers.
  • Drivers and cyclists must stop behind the yield line and wait until the pedestrian completely crosses the road before proceeding.
  • All road users must obey pedestrian crossover rules at all times of the day and night.

Responsibilities of Drivers

  1. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians
  2. Stop behind the yield line
  3. Make eye contact so the pedestrian sees you
  4. Wait until pedestrian completely crosses road before proceeding
  5. Drive with caution when the road is clear.
  6. Do not pass any other vehicle within 30 metres before a pedestrian crossover.

Responsibilities of Pedestrians

  1. Press the button at the pedestrian crossover to activate the flashing lights.
  2. Do not cross until the lights are flashing
  3. Wait for traffic to stop (both cars and bicycles)
  4. Make eye contact to ensure driver(s) see you
  5. Cross when traffic has come to a complete stop and you feel it's safe.

Responsibilities of Cyclists

Riding on the road with traffic

Cyclists have the same responsibilities as drivers when riding on the road with traffic.

  1. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians
  2. Stop behind the yield line
  3. Make eye contact so the pedestrian sees you
  4. Wait until pedestrian completely crosses road before proceeding
  5. Drive with caution when the road is clear.
  6. Do not pass any other vehicle within 30 metres before a pedestrian crossover.

Crossing the road using the pedestrian crossover

Cyclists have the same responsibilities as pedestrians when crossing the road at a pedestrian crossover.

Dismount and walk your bike across the pedestrian crossover. Do not ride your bike across the crossing.

  1. Press the button at the pedestrian crossover to activate the flashing lights
  2. Do not cross until the lights are flashing
  3. Wait for traffic to stop (both cars and bicycles)
  4. Make eye contact to ensure driver(s) see you
  5. Cross when traffic has come to a complete stop and you feel it's safe
