Canada Day Long Weekend Activities and Operating Hours

Canada Day is Saturday, July 1. Celebrate 150 years of Canada with the City of St. Catharines with free activities for the whole family will enjoy.

Activities

Flag Raising

The City's Canada 150 Task Force kicks off Canada Day festivities with a flag raising ceremony at Centennial Gardens (321 Oakdale Ave.) at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 1. Centennial Gardens was unveiled in 1967 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Canada. Join the Task Force to raise the Canadian flag and sing O Canada.

Canada Day Celebrations

Celebrate Canada Day with live entertainment, family activities and birthday cake Saturday, July 1 at Rennie Park in Port Dalhousie.

Dominion Day Picnic

Enjoy old-fashion fun at the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre during the annual Dominion Day Picnic Saturday, July 1.

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre  also debuts a new exhibit July 1 celebrating Canada's anniversary this year. The museum's One-Five-OH! exhibit explores St. Catharines through the lens of the city's diverse residents and features items and stories contributed by residents.

The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all weekend, including Canada Day, Saturday, July 1. Visitors can enjoy exploring the museum galleries and watching ships travel through Lock 3 of the Welland Canal. Admission is by donation.

Free swimming

The City's outdoor pools open for the season Saturday, July 1. Enjoy free Leisure swims on Canada Day at any City pool.

St. Catharines Farmers Market

The St. Catharines Farmers Market at Market Square in Downtown St. Catharines will be open as usual on Saturday, July 1 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Canada Day fireworks

With support from community donors, the Port Dalhousie Lions Club will light up the Port Dalhousie sky with its annual Canada Day fireworks. This year the Lions Club will set off fireworks from Henley Island. Access to Henley Island will be closed during the fireworks show.

The fireworks show begins at 10 p.m. Residents can view the fireworks from Rennie Park, Jaycee Park and the surrounding area. Admission is free.

A rain date is set for Sunday, July 2 at 10 p.m.

Parks and trails

Explore and enjoy City parks and trails from dawn until dusk. Parks and trails are for everyone to enjoy: please by follow posted rules and be mindful of others. While using trails, residents should be aware of their surroundings at all times, stick to established paths, remain alert and watch their footing.

Happy Rolph's Animal Farm

Happy Rolph's is open from dawn to dusk and features a large playground, picnic area and stunning views of Lake Ontario from the 9/11 Memorial Walkway.

Splash Pads

City splash pads at Lester B. Pearson Park and Catherine Street Park are open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Morningstar Mill

The picturesque Morningstar Mill heritage site at Decew Falls is open July 1-3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

St. Catharines Farmers Market

The St. Catharines Farmers Market at Market Square in Downtown St. Catharines will be open as usual on Saturday, July 1 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Garden City Golf Club

Go for the green at the Garden City Golf Club on Saturday, July 1. The City-run golf course will be open from 7 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting.

FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre

The Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre has screenings all weekend long, including Bon Cop, Bad Cop 2, the sequel to the 2006 Canadian film Bon Cop Bad Cop that was a box office smash across the country, on July 1 at 9 p.m. General admission is $9; Film House members get in for $7.

The Foster Festival is the very first theatre festival in Canada celebrating the work of a living Canadian playwright. Norm Foster comedies have been staged around the world for over two decades. Foster's Screwball Comedy hits the stage this weekend June 30 at 8 p.m. and July 2 at 2 p.m.

Holiday Closures

The following City facilities will be closed on Monday, July 3:

  • City Hall
  • Enterprise Centre
  • Parks, Recreation and Culture Services administration offices
  • St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre
  • Meridian Centre
  • Seymour Hannah Sport and Entertainment Centre, Bill Burgoyne Arena and Garden City Arena Complex
  • Russell Avenue and Port Weller community centres
  • Dunlop Drive, Port Dalhousie and West St. Catharines older adult centres (closed Saturday, July 1 and Monday, July 3)
  • Victoria Lawn Cemetery offices (visitation is always available from dawn to dusk)

St. Catharines Transit

St. Catharines Transit will be operating on a holiday schedule on Canada Day, Saturday, July 1. Transit returns to its regular schedule Sunday, July 2.

St. Catharines Transit's administration office will be closed Monday, July 3.
