Fire Prevention OfficeThe Fire Prevention Division of the Fire Department is tasked with conducting fire and life safety inspections for compliance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Ontario Fire Code and the Ontario Building code, among other relevant legislation.  These inspections include both new and existing buildings of any size or type within the City of St. Catharines and can be initiated through complaint, request or other circumstances.  In the case of new buildings, the Fire Prevention Division reviews building plans and evaluates development proposals including site plans.  For existing buildings, this division enforces fire code retrofit requirements and enforces the maintenance of a buildings life safety systems and equipment.  Also for existing buildings, this office issues plan approvals for compliance equivalencies.  Approvals are also granted to fire safety plans after they have been evaluated by this office and the St. Catharines Fire Chief.  In the case of non-compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, the fire prevention office also enforces the Fire Protection and Prevention Act by initiating and participating in the prosecution of offenders. 

The Fire prevention division is also very involved with the citizens of St. Catharines.  They are charged with developing, evaluating and delivering public education programs which include numerous presentations, talks, workgroups and events delivered various age groups.  Training and technical support is also administered to other fire department personnel.  This division also performs public relations and communicates with the public through the media. 

Fire Inspectors and Fire Prevention Officers are charged with the responsibility of investigating and analyzing fire incidents and rendering opinions as to the origin, cause, and development of a fire.  A fire investigation is a complex process and requires that inspectors maintain professional competency throughout their careers in this field as with all other aspects of the profession.  The City of St. Catharines Fire Prevention Division is constantly training and improving to serve the citizens of St. Catharines better in all of its functions.

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.


The Fire Prevention division operates from 8 Academy St., at the corner of Centre Street in downtown St. Catharines. This division consists of a staff of eight, including the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, a Fire Prevention Officer, and six Inspectors under the direction of the Deputy Chief.
