Carlisle Street Garage Project

A modern, mixed-use parking garage with environmentally friendly features is open for business on the corner of Carlisle and King streets.

The new edition of the Carlisle Street parking garage provides downtown visitors and residents with about 600 additional parking spaces in the city's core. About 500 of those are be above ground with another 100 below ground.

The garage features accessible parking on every level, but the third level is home to the bulk of it. That level is also free of curbs and other hindrances, while providing easy access to elevators and the sky lobby to connect with the Ministry of Transportation building across Carlisle Street.

A courtyard  on Carlisle Street will provide a place for people to stop for a break or access retailers in street-level storefronts once those retail spaces are occupied. There is even be enough room for a patio for a prospective coffee shop or eatery.

Rooftop gardens, plug-in stations for electric cars, LED sensor lighting, high-efficiency ventilation, and greywater collection for garden maintenance and wastewater in washrooms will help the garage achieve the equivalent of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver status. About 95 per cent of the materials from previous incarnation of the Carlisle Street parking garage were also recycled.

The City of St. Catharines shared the cost of the $27.9-million project with the province and Ottawa. Combined, the provincial and federal governments have contributed $18.6 million from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
