2018 Municipal Election   2018 St. Catharines Municipal Election Logo

 The Municipal Election will be held on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018.

The Premier announced at a press conference on July 27, 2018 his intention to pause on the general election of the Regional Chair for Niagara for the 2018 to 2022 term of Council. More information is available on the Niagara Region's website. 

Are you on the voters list?

Whether your own or rent in St. Catharines, residents can call 905.688.5601 ext. 1517 or email the City's Legal and Clerks Services to confirm if they're registered to vote in the 2018 Municipal and School Board Election.

Once you receive your voter card in the mail in early October, you can also contact Legal and Clerks Services with any revisions you may have to the information on your card. If you don't receive a voter card, you can contact Legal and Clerks Services to be placed on the voter's list.

Register as a Candidate & Third Party Advertisers:

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Friday, July 27, 2018

To run for the office of Mayor, Councillor or School Board Trustee for 2018, candidates must file a nomination paper.

Nominations are open starting May 1, 2018 during normal business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) up until Nomination Day on July 27, 2018, when the papers can only be submitted until 2 p.m.

Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign.

NEW ** Mayor and Councillor candidates must provide, along with their nomination paper, at least 25 declaration of endorsements from eligible electors. See "Become a Candidate" page for information. 

NEW ** Third Party Advertisements.  Registrations accepted between 1st day for filing nominations (May 1st) and the Friday before Voting Day (October 19, 2018) in regular election. See "Third Party Advertisers" page for information.

Nomination Day:
Friday, July 27, 2018 | 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Deadline for filing or withdrawing nominations: Nominations may be filed only between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can also withdraw nomination papers, in writing, before 2 p.m.

Election Day | Voting Day:
Monday, Oct. 22, 2018

Voting places will be open from 10 a.m. and close promptly at 8 p.m.

Municipal Offices to be elected in 2018

Mayor:

One (1) to be elected, at large within the City. Also serves as a member of Regional Council.

City Councillors:

Twelve (12) to be elected, two (2) from each of the six (6) municipal wards:

  • Ward 1 Merritton Ward
  • Ward 2 St. Andrew's Ward
  • Ward 3 St. George's Ward
  • Ward 4 St. Patrick's Ward
  • Ward 5 Grantham Ward
  • Ward 6 Port Dalhousie Ward

Regional Councillors:

Six (6) to be elected to represent the City of St. Catharines at the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

New - Regional Chair:

One (1) to be elected. Directly elected, at large, by voters from across the Niagara Region. Previously the position was filled by Regional Council appointing the chair from the newly elected members of Council.  

Nomination Papers for the Regional Chair will be received by the Niagara Regional Clerk, 1815 Sir Issac Brock Way, Thorold (same dates above apply).

School Board Trustees to be elected in 2018

English Language Public District School Board

Four (4) to be elected at large

English Language Catholic District School Board

Two (2) to be elected at large from Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6

One (1) to be elected from Ward 1 (Merritton Ward) to be combined with the City of Thorold

French Language Public School Board

One (1) to be elected at large

French Language Catholic School Board

One (1) to be elected at large
