Election of Regional Chair

Please note, on August 14, 2018, the Province of Ontario passed the Better Local Government Act, which amends the Municipal Act and the Municipal Elections Act to reverse changes introduced in 2016 for the election of the regional chair in Niagara.

As a result, in 2018 the Regional Chair in Niagara will be appointed following the same process as the 2014 election:

  • All municipalities in Niagara will elect Regional Councillors to serve on Regional Council (Six Regional Councillors will be elected to represent St. Catharines)
  • After the Oct. 22 election, and once the new term of Regional Council is in place, Regional Council will appoint one of the Regional Councillors to serve as Regional Chair for the four-year term of Regional Council
