Economic Sustainability

The City encourages public funding, private investment, business retention and expansion to support continued prosperity in the future. We need to be innovative in our approach and continue to demonstrate our leadership in the knowledge and creative-based economy.

Goals

  • Attract public and private investment, support local businesses and provide excellent customer service to demonstrate we are open for business.
  • Be an affordable city for young people, families and retired older adults.
  • Develop partnerships to enhance the economic vitality of the community.

For more information on the Economic Sustainability pillar please visit the Economic Sustainability Committee webpage.

Economic Sustainability Pillar Update

On March 19, City staff provided City Council with an update on the goals of the Economic Sustainability.

Highlights of the update are available in the tabs below or View a PDF of the Economic Sustainability Pillar Update

Economic Pillar Goal 1: Attract public and private investment, support local businesses and provide excellent customer service to demonstrate we are open for business

Construction activity in our community continues to grow. In 2017 we had a total of 963 building permits. About 570 were for dwellings, with an estimated value of about $196,000,000.

Economic Pillar Goal 2: Be an affordable City for all

There are positive indicators that St. Catharines is seeing an overall decline in the unemployment rate and moving at a similar rate to that of the province and Canada as a whole. For younger residents, after a couple years of decline, St. Catharines is starting to see an increase in youth employment rates.
