Sports Hall of Fame

Founded in 1990, the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of athletes and builders who have contributed significantly to the development of sport in St. Catharines and those who have excelled at the provincial, national and international sporting levels. The Hall of Fame features an exhibition space showcasing a selection of sports artifacts and memorabilia as well as the Wall of Fame that displays inductee names. 

 Location and How to Visit

  • The St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame is located on the Councourse Level inside the Meridian Centre, 1 David S. Howes Way, St. Catharines, Ontario.
  • The Exhibit is open for viewing only during select events at the Meridian Centre or by appointment. Due to COVID-19 closures, it is not currently available for viewing by the public.

 Current Exhibit

The St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame Exhibit currently showcases the sports of baseball and softball through displays of artifacts and archives from the St. Catharines Museum Collection.

Adjacent to the Exhibit is the David S. Howes, Sports Wall of Fame which lists the names of all past inductees.

About the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame

Induction Ceremony

  • The Sports Hall of Fame began as a small exhibit in the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre in 1990.
  • In January of 2012, the Sports Hall of Fame committee, officially unveiled the St. Catharines Sports Wall of Fame (originally located at Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Complex). The wall enshrines the names of the Hall of Fame Inductees.

  • In 2015, the Sports Wall of Fame was moved to the Meridian Centre where the Hall of Fame was also unveiled. The Wall of Fame is dedicated in honour of David S. Howes, a long time supporter of sports in St. Catharines. 

  • The founding committee included Jack Gatecliff, Joe McCaffrey, Ellard O’Brien, Archie Katzman and Bill Stevenson.
  • Since its creation, the Sports Hall of Fame Committee has grown to 10 members, bringing together sports enthusiasts, historians and past inductees.
  • Every year, the committee selects five new members to be inducted at the Sports Celebrity Dinner in November.

How to Nominate

Nominations and Induction Ceremonies

2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame will be not be inducting any new members for 2020.

 

2021

Nominations will continue to be accepted from 2020 and 2021 for the 2021 induction.
