City honours green thumbs with 31st annual Trillium Awards

Posted on Wednesday October 07, 2015

Oct. 8, 2015 – The City of St. Catharines recognized its greenest thumbs last night during the 31st annual Trillium Awards.

Mayor Walter Sendzik and the City applauded 26 recipients from across St. Catharines who truly put the garden into Garden City. The Trillium Awards honour residents and organizations for their work in making St. Catharines a more beautiful, green and friendly place.

"These gardens play an important role in creating visual beauty in our neighbourhoods and enhance our image as the Garden City," said Mayor Sendzik.

St. Catharines has long been known as the Garden City. Mayor Sendzik said the City’s new Strategic Plan includes a focus on sustainability and goals that continue to green St. Catharines. One of the Strategic Plan’s objectives is to support environmental sustainability by creating more community gardens, promoting water conservation and enhancing the urban tree canopy.

"St. Catharines residents can play an important role in greening our city by beginning with their own yards and gardens. The nominees and recipients of the Trillium Awards show us how it can be done. I congratulate all our Trillium Award nominees and award recipients and thank everyone for their hard work in making St. Catharines a more beautiful, sustainable and more green place to live."

The City received more than 200 nominations. Judges visited properties in August and ranked entries based on use of colour, garden maintenance, use of plant and landscape material, as well as how the properties fit in with the existing landscapes.
