Arenas & Ice Rinks

The City of St. Catharines operates four arenas with eight ice pads conveniently located throughout the city. They provide citizens and visitors with the opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of healthy activities for all ages and skill levels and to contribute through community events as spectator or participant. These include recreational and minor hockey, public skating, figure skating, lacrosse, tournaments and special events.

Rink #4 at Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre Temporarily Closed

Rink #4 at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre is temporarily closed due to an issue with its concrete pad. City staff noticed the pad in rink #4 was heaving during the 2014/2015 season and removed the ice in summer 2015 to investigate the pad. Once the ice was removed staff realized the concrete pad was heaving more than previously thought, and have since been investigating to discover the cause.

Consultants assessed Rink #4 in fall 2015 and presented a report to City Council Nov. 30 outlining the necessary repairs, including an estimated timline and cost for repairs.

Repair timeline

  • May 2016. Rinks #1 and #4  will close so crews can replace the concrete pad in Rink #4 and install separate heating and cooling systems under each ice surface. Work should last for twelve weeks. Rinks #2 and #3 will remain open during this time.
  • All four rinks will be open fall 2016 and winter 2017.
  • Spring 2017. Rinks #2 and #3 are scheduled to close so the concrete pad in Rink #3 can be replaced and separate heating and cooling systems can be installed under each ice surface. Rinks #1 and #4 will remain open during this time.

Information on the repair timeline and construction work will be posted here as it becomes available.
