Friends of Morningstar Mill

Who are they?

The Friends of Morningstar Mill is a volunteer group committed to preserving the historic Morningstar Mill grist mill site and interpreting its rich history.

In 1992, Mr. Gary Konkle approached St. Catharines City Council to get permission to form a group of volunteers to be called The Friends of Morningstar Mill. Once established, they began to restore and then operate the mill, which continues to be the only operating water powered gristmill in the Niagara Peninsula. At the start of the restoration project, much of the machinery and stones were as Wilson Morningstar, the namesake miller, had left them in 1933. The buildings were collapsing or had disappeared altogether.

What do the Friends of Morningstar Mill do?

Over the years, hundreds of volunteers built, restored and developed exhibits, demonstrations and tours, making the site what it is today. Thanks to the Friends, admission to the site continues to be free to the public. New Friends are always welcome to share their skills and experience in the process of restoring, interpreting and maintaining this Niagara landmark.

How to get involved

Volunteers are welcome to assist with:

  • Marketing
  • Guides for tours
  • Gardening
  • Carpentry
  • Conservation and light maintenance work, including cleaning, painting, historic object management, etc.
  • Collection management (research, cataloguing, etc.)

The site is open from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.

Volunteers are normally on site Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Volunteers need not come for the full day, every day.
Any time that can be given is appreciated.
