Chimenias & Outdoor Fireplaces

The St. Catharines Fire Service wishes to advise consumers about the restrictions on the use chimenias and outdoor fireplaces in Ontario, as per the Ontario Fire Code.

Use of chimenias and outdoor fireplaces is prohibited in the City of St. Catharines.

Each year, St. Catharines Fire Service receives hundreds of complaints and inquiries regarding open burning, and the use of these and similar products. It is the policy of the St. Catharines Fire Service to respond to all reports of open burning, including those occurring in the products pictured above or similar products, and to require the immediate extinguishing of these fires.

The Fire Protection and Prevention Act allows for a penalty of up to $100,000 for the violation of the Ontario Fire Code, including open burning.

Residents of municipalities outside of St. Catharines should contact their local fire department for information about the use of these items in their local jurisdiction.

For additional information regarding open burning or the use of  chimenias and outdoor fireplaces, please contact the Fire Prevention Office.
