City Clerk: School Crossing Guard Program

The principal function of a School Crossing Guard Program is to assist students to cross a busy street in a safe and efficient manner.

This process requires that the guard identify adequate gaps in traffic or, if they prove to be insufficient, to create safe gaps. In order to perform effectively a guard must be constantly alert to the needs and actions of the children, the volume and direction of traffic, and the diverse weather conditions which affects all aspects of a crossing situation.

Persons selected to carry out this important responsibility must be dependable, available, physically fit, of good character and possess an understanding of young people. These attributes are essential given the trust and dependence placed on School Crossing Guards by the students in their care.

Although they are not police officers, School Crossing Guards have the authority, under the Highway Traffic Act, to require approaching vehicles to stop for their crossing. The use of this authority must be displayed in a confident, decisive, firm, understanding, and fair manner.

The continued health and safety of children during their daily trips to and from school rests with the School Crossing Guard.

Staffing for the School Crossing Guard Program is provided through the City Clerk’s Division. Persons interested in working as a School Crossing Guard or have any questions regarding the program should contact the Human Resources Department at 905-688-5601 extension 1484.
